| Stuart’s Master of Science in Finance is designed to provide you with the advanced skills in applied finance required in today’s competitive financial environment. The program provides a strong foundation in economics and teaches the quantitative and analytical skills employed in the investment structuring, pricing,
and risk management of financial instruments, in the development of trading strategies, and in the utilization of financial products by end-users. The curriculum was developed in consultation with leading industry professionals and incorporates an extensive use of industry software.
Faculty members possess excellent academic credentials as well as broad industry experience. Stuart full-time faculty have previously worked at commercial and investment banks and international institutions, such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). Adjunct faculty members are drawn from highly qualified professionals working in Chicago ’s financial services industry.

Finance courses are supported by Stuart’s Quantitative Research Lab (QRL), which is equipped with 32 workstations with live data and news feeds provided by Reuters. The QRL is outfitted with software from numerous industry vendors, such as Barra, Ibbotson Associates, MatLab, Market Guide, and the RiskMetrics Group. The QRL incorporates extensive databases, such as International Financial Statistics, Emerging Markets Data Base, Ibbotson Associates, and Bridge/CRB InfoTech. The QRL continually updates its capabilities by investing in new hardware and acquiring the latest software used in the financial industry.
Admission Requirements: The admission standards are similar to those of first-tier MBA programs. Acceptance to the MS in Finance Program requires a degree of competence in algebra, calculus, statistics, and accounting. Some prerequisite courses may be required.
Program Requirements: In order to earn a degree in Finance from IIT Stuart, you will need to successfully complete a total of fourteen courses for all concentrations except Quantitative Finance, for which you will take a total of sixteen. Six of the courses are predetermined core courses, regardless of which concentration you pursue. For details, please review our course descriptions. As a new student, you will meet with an adviser to plan an individual course of study to meet your specific goals.

Concentration Requirements: To gain a competitive advantage in the market place, students are strongly encouraged to pursue at least one concentration. In order to earn your concentration, you will take eight courses (ten for Quantitative Finance) in addition to the six core courses.

In addition to the six core courses, you select a total of eight additional courses. You will pick those eight courses from the following four areas:
- Two Corporate Finance courses from the following:
- Two Economics courses from the following:
- Two Risk Management courses from the following:
- Two electives*
Quantitative Finance
or Quantitative Finance with
No Programming Background
In addition to the six core courses, you
select a total of ten additional courses. However only fourteen
of the total of courses will count towards your degree, with two
being computing prerequisite courses. You will pick those ten
courses from the following five areas:

Up to two electives may be taken from outside the courses
prescribed above. These electives may be taken from other
offerings of the Stuart School of Business, the Center
for Law and Financial Markets, the Chicago-Kent College of Law,
or the Main Campus graduate programs, provided that: (1) they
are consistent with the MS Finance program’s objectives; and (2)
they have been approved, prior to the student’s registration, by
the Associate Director of the MS Finance program.
In no event will a “prerequisite course” that is not part of the
Finance Program curriculum be counted toward a student’s program
of study. For example, a “prerequisite course” may either be a
formal prerequisite, such as MBA 510 which is a formal
prerequisite for ACCT 501, or an informal prerequisite such as a
basic math course which is an informal prerequisite for MSF 511.
