The Financial Markets Certificate Program

 

Description: Each certificate program consists of four courses, all drawn from the MS in Financial Markets degree program. You will learn from a faculty of top industry executives, traders, marketers, and researchers currently employed by firms that pioneered today's new markets and innovative financial instruments. And if you decide to pursue an MS in Financial Markets at IIT Stuart, you can apply your certificate credits from this certificate program towards an MS in Financial Markets.

Admission Requirements: Applicants are required to take a diagnostic math exam prior to enrolling. The material covered in the exam is explained in the Diagnostic Math Exam Review Material. Depending on your score, you may be required to take FM 490 Math for Financial Markets and/or FM 491 Statistics for Financial Markets.. All students must have an undergraduate degree.

Program Requirements: Courses meet one evening a week for 11 weeks at IIT's Downtown Campus, just blocks from Union Station, Ogilvie Station and the major exchanges.

Financial Markets Certificate Programs:


Alternative Investments Certificate

Description: This program focuses on the analysis of non-traditional investment areas, such as hedge funds and venture capital. This concentration is most appropriate for students who are planning a career as a manager or analyst for hedge funds or venture capital funds.

In order to earn an Alternative Investments certificate, you will need to successfully complete the following four courses:

  • FM 503 Introduction to Investments*

  • FM 524 Hedge Funds

  • FM 525 Real Estate Investments Analysis

  • FM 592 Enterprise Formation and Finance

* FM 503 requires prior completion of FM 507 and FM 508. Students must either take these prerequisites or receive permission from the advisor in order to take this course.

Trading Strategies Certificate

Description: This program provides students with both strategic trading expertise and technical skills required for success in today's online marketplace. Students study fundamental and technical analysis of equities, futures, options, bonds, sector and exchange traded funds; develop trading systems; and practice with leading-edge trading and risk management software.

In order to earn a Trading Strategies certificate, you will need to successfully complete the following course:

  • FM 506 Options and Options Theory*

And any three courses from the following:

  • FM 543 Market Analysis

  • FM 544 Equity Strategies

  • FM 545 Advanced Options Trading Strategy

  • FM 546 Fixed Income Trading Stategies

* Prerequisites for this course are FM 507 and FM 508. Students must either take these prerequisites or receive permission from the advisor in order to take this course.

Financial Markets Certificate

Description: This program is designed for professionals—bankers, accountants, lawyers and corporate managers—who want to know more about modern financial markets and how they operate. Beginning with an overview of global financial institutions and markets, the curriculum emphasizes underlying economic processes driving the markets, intermarket relationships and the global regulatory structures governing them.

FM 503* Introduction to Investments

Pick three from the following four courses:

  • FM 500 Global Financial Markets

  • FM 502 Global Market Economics

  • FM 505 Futures and Futures Markets

  • FM 506 Options and Options Theory

Financial Programming Certificate

Description: This program provides rigorous training in C++/Visual C++.NET and Visual Basic.NET as well as exploration of the technological infrastructure required to affect trading on electronic exchanges around the world. 

In order to earn an Financial Programming certificate, you will need to successfully complete the following four courses:

  • FM 492 Introduction to C/C++ Programming for Financial Markets

  • FM 508 Introduction to Investments and Statistical Methods in Financial Markets

  • FM 530 Visual Basic & Databases for Financial Markets

  • FM 538 Advanced OOP for Financial Markets (Prerequisites: FM 506*, FM 530, and FM 492 or equivalent)

* Prerequisites for this course are FM 507 and FM 508. Students must either take these prerequisites or receive permission from the advisor in order to take this course.

Portfolio Management Certificate

Description: This program is designed to provide intensive preparation for the Chartered Financial Analyst examination. All topics are directly linked to examination requirements and include: financial statement analysis (ratios, inventories, long-lived assets, income taxes, debt, leases, and pensions); fundamentals of interest rates, present value, and portfolio theory; quantitative skills and investment strategies for equities, bonds, and foreign exchange; mean-variance optimization; single and multiple factor analysis; simulation methodology; development of dynamic hedging strategies; models for equity valuation.

In order to earn a Portfolio Management certificate, you will need to successfully complete the following five courses:

  • FM 503 Introduction to Investments*

  • FM 520 Equity Valuation

  • FM 521 Global Investment Strategy (Prerequisites: FM 508 Introduction to Investments and Statistical Methods in Financial Markets).

  • FM 523 Financial Statement and Security Analysis (Prerequisite: MBA 510 Financial and Managerial Accounting or consent of instructor)

* FM 503 requires prior completion of FM 507 and FM 508. Students must either take these prerequisites or receive permission from the advisor in order to take this course.
